Melinda felt her phone buzz in her pocket. It’s 7:00 PM in the evening, who would be calling me? She pulls out her phone frantically, worried it might be an emergency. The number is unrecognizable. Just another Spam call, I swear I don’t even use this thing to call anyone anymore. Five minutes later her phone vibrates again, this time a voicemail message, “Hi Melinda, this is Tony over at Downtown Toyota. I received your request for the 2020 Sequoia, give me a call when you have a minute and we can schedule a test drive in the next couple of days.” Melinda texts the number straight back with a question, not knowing that Tony had called from the main dealership line which could not receive texts. After not receiving a text back right away, Melinda assumes that Tony is just another flakey salesman and decides she’d rather not work with Downtown Toyota.

Car buyers and dealers are no longer speaking the same language, heck, they aren’t even on the same device half the time. 92% of consumers prefer text-based communication like text messaging or live chat, compared to traditional phone calls and emails. All the while, 42% of businesses still think their customers prefer phone calls.
